Trojan Volleyball Conquers the Cardinals

Trojan Volleyball was victorious in the JV and Varsity matches vs John Paul II Tuesday night. The JV opened up the evening with a 2-0 victory. The Varsity concluded the night with a 3-1 win.

In the first set for the Varsity, it was a back-and-forth battle with the Cardinals. The Trojans led the opening set until the Cardinals evened the scoring at 15 all. The lead continued to change until it favored the Trojans at 21-20, where they went on to close out the set 25-21.

The second set saw the Cardinals surge early on, forcing a Trojan timeout at 3-11. Anya Ouimette led a service run that helped tie up the set at 14-14. The Cardinals prevailed and went on to take the set 20-25.

The third set was all Trojans. An immediate side out put the Trojans on top and they never looked back. A Cardinals hitting error forced a time out and put the Trojans ahead 18-10. The Cardinals rallied back, though never taking the lead, and forced coach Erin Terry to take a timeout at 23-18. A mix of strong defensive effort and a kill by Sarah Wong led to the Trojans earning the next two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Sydney Stewart opened up the fourth set with a kill which set the tone for the set. The Trojans remained dominant at the net with multiple kills from Peyton Walton, Anya Ouimette, and Sarah Wong. The team led took a five-point lead late in the set that proved to be to the margin of victory for the Trojans. A Cardinals hitting error resulted in the Trojans taking set four 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Defense was on display for the team, led by Natalia Kattan in the backrow. The Senior defensive specialist made some point-saving plays that was a spark for the team. She led the team in digs with 26 on the night. The front row trio of Peyton Walton, Anya Ouimette, and Sarah Wong was a force at the net and kept the Cardinals defense on their toes all night. Ouitmette was the top hitter for the Trojans with 16 kills and a 0.239 hititng percentage for the match. The victory over John Paul II was the first for the Trojans since October 14, 2021, and just the team's second win over the Cardinals in the past six years.

The Trojans will work to build off the momentum at the McKinney Christian tournament on Thursday where they will take on Legacy Christian and Coram Deo. The team will then face Frisco Panther Creek Friday night before concluding the week of games on Saturday back at the McKinney Christian tournament.
