THE RUNDOWN
Trojan Football opened the 2025 season with a commanding 45-6 victory over Greenhill on Friday night at Brinkmann Field. The win marks Coach Trey Haverty's first at the helm of the Trojans, as TCA scored its most points in a season opener in nine years.
While there is always room for improvement after the first game of the season, the Trojan coaching staff has plenty of positives to build upon. Defensively -- TCA held an opponent to six points or less for the first time since 2023 and forced a pair of first-half Hornet turnovers. While on the offensive end, senior signal caller Hunter Flatt (12-for-14, 234 yards, 3 touchdowns) looked confident right out of the gate.
The first touchdown of the new campaign was scored off the ground game of Campbell Laible. The senior halfback punched one in on the opening drive to give the Trojans a lead that remained unchallenged the rest of the evening. While several of the Trojan starters were pulled early in the second half, Laible still managed to amass nearly 100 all-purpose yards as part of a tandem with sophomore rusher Walker Zolfo (60 yards, 2 touchdowns).
After the early success on the ground, Flatt found a familiar friend -- Chase Griffin -- near the front Pylon for the first touchdown pass of the new season with a minute remaining in the opening quarter. Griffin totaled two touchdown grabs and almost 70 yards receiving and looks primed to build upon his breakout 2024 junior campaign.
A strong Trojan lead grew into an assured victory as junior MJ Smith made a 50-yard house call midway through the second quarter while Griffin and Zolfo scored touchdowns of their own to cap off a 21-point second quarter and a 38-point first half.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
– TCA has earned week one wins over Greenhill in back-to-back seasons.
– Griffin recorded the fourth multi-touchdown game of his TCA career.
– The 45 points on opening day are TCA's most since a 63-61 win over Denison in 2016.
