COUNTDOWN TO FIRST PITCH
The TCA varsity baseball team is set to host John Paul II this Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. The Trojans and Cardinals meet for the first time this season, with the winner advancing to the regional round to face the top-seeded Prestonwood Lions out of District 2.
The Trojans enter the postseason fray as winners in seven of their last 10 regular-season contests. Meanwhile, the Cardinals begin playoff action in the midst of a 2-8 skid. Despite dropping a 2-1 battle to Fort Worth Southwest Christian in a playoff warmup last Thursday, the Trojans hope to carry their recent momentum into this win-or-go-home battle against a former district rival.
TCA STORYLINES
– Home field advantage has been alive and well for the Trojans in recent weeks. TCA is 5-2 at home in the month of April and 8-7 on the year.
– The Trojans are no strangers to close games this season. TCA is undefeated in games decided by extra innings (3-0) and 5-2 in games decided by a single run.
– A key to victory for the Trojans is the offensive production of the Nelson brothers. Junior Beck Nelson leads the team with a .350 batting average, and senior outfielder Sloan Nelson is swinging a hot bat with a .346 batting average and a four-game hit streak.
– Colin Hamilton's 21 runs scored are a team-high.
– Through 12 starts, Trojan ace Ryan Janacek boasts a sub 3.00 ERA (2.43) with a team-high 75 punchouts this year. TCA will need another good outing from the third-year pitcher to secure a win over the Cards.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
– Last time out, the Cardinals celebrated Senior Night with a 4-1 win over Dallas HSAA.
– Wins have been hard to come on the road for the Cardinals this season. John Paul II is just 2-9 in games played away from home.
– One of the most impressive wins on the Cardinals' resume this season is a 12-0 win over top-ranked Liberty Christian in February.
– The magic number for the Trojans on Tuesday might be six runs. John Paul II scored more than five runs on just six occasions this year.
