THE RUNDOWN:
The TCA boys varsity golf team hoisted the TAPPS 6A North Regional Trophy following a historic performance at the Buffalo Creek Golf Club April 22-23 in Heath, Texas. TCA (273-278) turned in a team score of 551 to best the nine-team field and secure a ticket to the TAPPS Championships May 5-6 in Glen Rose.
The 21-time state champions topped second-place Parish Episcopal by 49 shots while placing four players on the top-10 leaderboard. Senior Nate Miller took home the individual title (64-63) by firing off an incredible 15-under par,127 for a 10-stroke victory over the runner-up. The veteran Trojan played his best golf down the stretch throughout the tournament, absolutely tearing through the back nine of Buffalo Creek by making birdie a combined 11 times with an eagle on the par-5 14th hole.
TCA's entire trio of seniors performed exceptionally on the big stage. Sean Meador (68-70) placed third overall, recording an impressive 4-under par, 138 scorecard that fell just one shot shy of second place. Carson Harris (1-under, 141) rounded out the senior trio with a fourth-place finish.
Sophomore Beck Olinghouse (3-over, 145) played some of his best golf of the season. The underclassman tied Cooper McDole of Liberty Christian for sixth place, the best finish of his career.
Freshman Bentley Long (164) rounded out the five-man lineup and gained valuable experience in his round of postseason golf. Individual competitors Jack Ferem and Brady Glover also represented TCA in the tournament.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
– Nate Miller's 15-under par, 127 is both a TAPPS and a TCA scoring record.
– TCA wins its fourth tournament of the year and its second of the spring.
– The Trojans advance to the state championship in pursuit of their eight-consecutive state title.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
3 – The TCA lineup had no issues with the par-5 14th at Buffalo Creek, with Nate Miller, Carson Harris and Beck Olinghouse all recording an eagle on that hole.
5 – Nate Miller recorded his fifth individual win of the season.
21 – The senior trio of Miller, Meador and Harris have cracked the top 10 a combined 21 times this season.
